GUWAHATI: After being deprived of their salaries for last 10 to 15 years, the PHE (Jal) Asom, Asthayi Sramik Karmachari Parishad has declared non-cooperation from Friday to October 8.
The body's president Ganga Prasad Rai said despite numerous appeals to the PHE (Public Health Engineering) Minister and respective departments of the Assam government, the workers have been deprived of their salaries from last 10 to 15 years.
The workers highlighted their plight by staging an agitation at Panbazar on Friday.
"Except assurance, the workers have not received anything from the government. However, a section of committees running PHE schemes in urban areas have been providing minimum wages to the pump operators," said general secretary Utpal Goswami.
In this regard, the coordination committee running the PHE schemes in Guwahati held a meeting in which they appealed to the government to appoint these pump operators and regularize their jobs.
If the government provides salaries to the workers then the taxes given by the citizens will reduce, asserted the coordination committee in the meeting.
Further, the workers alleged that till date the government has not paid heed to their demands.
Highlighting the plight of the workers, the PHE (Jal) Asom, Asthayi Sramik Karmachari Parishad submitted a memorandum to PHE Chief Engineers on August 12, 2020. In the memorandum, the Karmachari Parishad demanded appointment within September 30.
After receiving no response from the government, the workers have now resorted to non-cooperation till October 8, Goswami added.
