 STAFF REPORTER,

GUWAHATI: The Hatigaon road of Guwahati has been under construction for quite some time now and with no surety of when it will be finally completed, residents of the region have been a major reason of concern for the people who have their offices or residences in the region. The stretch from the Sewali Path to the Little Flower School remains a very treacherous path for the people.

Firstly the road is full of potholes, causing problems for motorists, both two-wheelers and four-wheelers. These have also been the reason for a large number of accidents over the last few months. The problem becomes even more severe because of the presence of e-rickshaws and the rikshaws fitted with electric motors.

Secondly, the lack of proper street lighting continues to cause problems for both pedestrians and motorists and increases the chances of accidents manifold. In case of rain, it becomes a very risky affair to cross that particular stretch of road.

With the deluge last Saturday causing massive water logging in the locality, parts of the locality remain to be underwater even on Monday. With the state’s Lok Nirman department unable to complete the development of this important road even after such a long duration of time, it has become a major source of concern for the people.

A local resident mentioned,” Saturday’s rain had made it impossible for the people to take this road and a large number of people used alternate and much longer routes. We are not sure why it is taking the authorities so long to report this road and when will it finally be completed.”

Another local shopkeeper mentioned,” We see people encountering accidents and getting injured because of that almost every day. It remains to see how much longer people have to suffer because of these road conditions. And with the recent rains, urban flooding has become another risk for the people of the locality.

It can be noted that this road serves as a direct link between Lalmati on the National Highway and the MLA hostel in Ganeshguri. It also is an essential road for reaching the Hatigaon and Bhetapara localities, among others.
