GUWAHATI: The Directorate of Museums, Assam, in collaboration with the National Research Laboratory for Conservation of Cultural Property (NRLC), Lucknow, has organized a workshop on care of museum objects at Kanaklal Barua auditorium in Assam state Museum. The inaugural ceremony was held on Monday and the workshop will continue till November 8. The workshop has focused on many important aspects, including preventive conservation, object cleaning, storage management, handling, packing and transportation, disaster management and documentation etc.

The resource persons are Dr. Sangeeta Chakraborty, Ashok Das, Tarun Chandra Saikia and Naba Kumar Patgiri. A total of 18 participants have attended the workshop from different district museums and also a few interns.

The Directorate of Museums Yazing, Assam Shimray Wunglengton said, “The current workshop is focused on conservation of heritage objects. Assam has a unique number of heritage objects, which can’t be found even in British museums. If we maintain preventive conservation, 70 per cent of objects can be prolonged and preserved for posterity. We have 14 museums and four are in autonomous councils now. Two new museums are coming up, one at Majuli which Chief Minister laid foundation this year in July. We have another museum coming up at Silchar in the next few years.”
