Dispelling COVID's Darkness; Assam lights diyas, candles, torch & mobile flashlights

GUWAHATI: The scene of pin-drop silence and complete emptiness that Guwahati— Assam’s capital city & gateway to the North East, had been witnessing soon after the Sunset due to the ongoing nation-wide lockdown, had an exception on Sunday evening.

The city residents came out to their entrance gates, balconies and rooftops at 9 pm on Sunday to lit earthen lamps (diyas) and candles to reciprocate the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to give a united fight against the fatal coronavirus.

On April 3, PM Modi gave video message urging the people of the country to turn off their lights for nine minutes at 09:00 pm on April 5 and light a candle or a ‘diya’ or even use the flashlight to mark the country’s fight against COVID-19 pandemic.

Besides lighting earthen lamps and candles, many city residents switched on their mobile phone flash lights at their homes and apartments in different localities. Residents of Spanish Garden, the apartment on Zoo Road which was sealed by the administration on Saturday after one of its residents tested COVID positive, also lit lamps and candles. The scene is more or less same across the State. People in lower, central, upper Assam and Barak Valley also observed the event.

“Let our lights dispell all pervading darkness in the world due to coronavirus,” said a city resident. Governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi and Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal also lighted earthen lamps to appreciate the role played by all frontline workers in the fight against corona.
