Dispur asks SEBA, AHSEC to prepare analytical report on HSLC, HS results

GUWAHATI: The Assam Government has directed the Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA) and the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) to prepare an analytical report on the results of the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) and Higher Secondary (HS) exams this year. The report will include an analysis of how government educational institutions and private institutions have fared, the district-wise performance etc. Based on the report, the government will take measures to improve the government education sector.

Talking to media persons in Guwahati on Tuesday, State Education Minister Dr Ranoj Pegu said, “This year in the HS exam, there are more rank holders from private institutions than from government institutions. However, this does not mean that government HS schools and colleges have not performed well. They have also produced good results in this year’s HS exam. In fact, all districts have done fairly well this year. Baksa and Chirang districts had performed poorly last year but this year they have shown improvement. For this I want to congratulate the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) authority.

“The government has asked the SEBA and AHSEC to prepare an analytical report based on this year’s HSLC and HS exam results. If it is seen that more steps have to be taken to improve the performance of government educational institutions, the government will take the necessary measures. The government’s main thrust is on improving the gross enrolment ratio in higher education.”

The Education Minister said that at present, Assam’s gross enrolment ratio was lower than the all-India ratio. “While the all-India ratio is 30, in Assam the enrolment ratio is only 17. However, we are hopeful that this year the ratio will improve,” he said.

He further said, “Our concern is the dropout rate in the secondary level. Earlier it was 30% but now it has come down to 20%. We will have to take steps to decrease the dropout rate further.”

While responding to criticism from some sections about the delay in announcing the HS results this year, the Education Minister said, “Last year, the results were declared 76 days after the exam was conducted. This year, the results were announced 77 days after the exam was conducted. There was a delay of just one day. We will also have to consider the fact that this year there were 1.24 lakh more candidates than last year and there are a total of 84 subjects in the HS exam. However, we will ask the AHSEC to declare the results a bit earlier next year if possible.”
