GUWAHATI: A meeting of the District Road Safety Committee of Kamrup Metropolitan District was held recently under the chairmanship of Pallav Gopal Jha.

Assistant Transport Commissioner and District Transport Officer (Registration and Licencing) Gautam Das, District Road Safety Committee Member-Secretary Hemant Deuri Bharali, Transport Officer (Initiator) Himanshu Kumar Das, Regional Transport Authority Rafiqul Islam, and NHRA were also present. The meeting was also attended by electricity department officers Ruparanjan Kalita and Ankur Kumar Das, public works road department officer Mridul Das, traffic inspector Joysing Rangfar, and other senior officers of various departments involved in road safety.

Pallav Gopal Jha emphasised that the roads of the city should be suitable for safe traffic at all times. He said that from now on, any department that has to dig roads in the city can only work with the permission of the Public Works Department, police, and Guwahati Municipal Corporation. He urged the Public Works Department to prepare an SOP regarding the same and submit it within a week. The commissioner directed District Development Commissioner Gauri Shankar Das to prepare a report on which roads fall under which departments in the city. He directed the departments to obtain permission for a fixed period for all the works to be completed on the roads of the city, including pipes, cables, electrical connections, etc.

He also mentioned that regular searches are being carried out in various hotels and dhabas in the city for suspected drugs, liquor, cannabis, gambling, and other illegal activities. The Commissioner also directed the Excise and Public Works Department to prepare proper draughts regarding the smooth movement of traffic and submit them by June. Gautam Das briefed the members on the exceptional programmes undertaken by the transport department in various higher educational institutions in the city regarding road safety awareness. He urged the various departments involved in road safety to cooperate in reducing road accidents by creating a safe traffic system in the city in the coming days.

Himanshu Kumar Das said both drivers and riders of two-wheelers need to wear helmets and urged parents to ensure that children and young students never ride two-wheelers without wearing helmets. The official also urged the departments to identify accident-prone areas of the city, continue regular monitoring of the areas, find out the exact cause of accidents, and make the areas suitable for easy traffic.
