Diwali: Only green firecrackers permitted

GUWAHAT: A meeting was organized in the Kamrup (M) district commissioner's office for the celebration of Diwali so that it is celebrated without any accidents. The meeting was chaired by Additional District Commissioner Dhrubajyoti Hazarika, and several directives were proposed regarding the celebration of Diwali.

The meeting discussed the guidelines issued by the Police Commissionerate as per the directions of the Supreme Court, National Green Tribunal, Ministry of Environment and Forest, Pollution Control Board, Assam.

As per the directions, this time, green firecrackers with the tag of 'Made in India' must be sold and lit. The public can burst firecrackers while maintaining the time limit from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., and noise-producing fire crackers are strictly prohibited after 10:00 p.m. until 8:00 a.m.

Bursting of crackers is prohibited in the silent zones of the city, like Gauhati High Court, Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), and the Assam Secretariat.

According to the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), there are three types of green firecrackers: SWAS (Safe Water Releaser), STAR (Safe Thermite Cracker), and SAFAL (Safe Minimal Aluminium), and these produce sounds that are less than 125 decibels, and the administration will follow these interpretations. The police administration will issue the necessary permit for the sale of the firecrackers. The one who receives the permit will be selling the 'Made in India' green firecrackers. Strict action will be taken against the vendors if the rules are violated when they issue the permit.

The additional DC appeals to the public and the vendors that the guidelines that are imposed are to be followed, and the one who violates them will be punished. He asked the public to celebrate Diwali as a festival of lights and reduce the bursting of firecrackers.

The meeting was attended by senior police officials, senior officers of district administration, circle officers, officers of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), other departments, and members of the Kali Puja committee.
