GUWAHATI: The door-to-door garbage collection idea was implemented by the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) in a bid to ease the citizens lives as well as ensure that garbage is not randomly dumped on the road. In terms of services, the urban local body charges the citizens as well as the places of business. However, this service remains inactive or highly inefficient in many parts of Guwahati.

Residents of the Anil Nagar, Bhaskar Nagar, and Jyoti Nagar localities of the city have raised complaints regarding this with the authorities. They have mentioned that, firstly, the garbage collection does not take place at a fixed time of the day, and secondly, they hardly wait for people to hand over the garbage. Sometimes the NGOs that have been allotted the work of collecting the waste don’t even turn up, leading people to dump the waste in a larger collection area. And with the lack of proper clearing of these designated dustbins, the nauseating odour from the rotting garbage makes the condition unbearable. It also increases the risk of vector-borne diseases. Some residents also pointed out that although they keep the garbage in bigdustbins near their gates, the people involved in garbage collection sometimes do not clear the same.

To that end, the locals have demanded that the GMC take concrete steps to clear the garbage. And since they collect money for the same, it is the responsibility of the body to ensure that proper steps are taken. They have also demanded that the GMC Mayor personally look into these instances and resolve the problem, as the public is facing a lot of problems during the monsoons.
