Dr. Kalyan Kalita appointed as Assam Engineering College in-charge principal

GUWAHATI: The Governor of Assam appointed Dr. Kalyan Kalita, Professor and Head of the Department, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Assam Engineering College, as the in-charge Principal of Assam Engineering College until further orders. He will take over from Dr. Atul Bora immediately.

The Department of Higher Education (Technical) has issued a notification to this effect today.

Dr. Atul Bora, Principal, AEC, will hand over the charge to Dr. Kalyan Kalita. The notification directed the principal to proceed on leave immediately until further orders.

The State Government had asked the Education Department to institute a high-level committee to inquire into the circumstances leading to an accident at Jalukbari that claimed the lives of seven AEC students recently. And the government asked the AEC principal and the superintendent concerned with the hostel to go on leave until the inquiry is over.

Further, to prevent the recurrence of any incident that is potentially life-threatening to the student community, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also asked the Education Department to constitute another committee to strengthen discipline, rules, and regulations in hostels of educational institutions. The committee will also look into strict enforcement of in- and out-times of hostels, complete prohibition of alcohol, etc., on hostel campuses and hostels, and prohibition of extended stays at hostel borders. The committee will also recommend ways to promote healthy community life within the hostels.
