Dumping ground in Chandrapur row completes 30 days; protestors chalk out weeklong stir

GUWAHATI: The continuous protests in Chandrapur over the dumping ground issue completed 30 days on Sunday. The protestors have taken a pledge at a meeting here during the day to continue their stir till the authorities withdraw their decision to shift the dumping ground from Boragaon to Chandrapur – both in the city. They have also chalked out their agitational programme for the following week from July 26 to August 1.

Meanwhile, the general secretary of the Chandrapur unit of AASU (All Assam Students Union), Tuitumoni Kalita told reporters at the protest site, "We condemn the stoic silence of the authorities concerned over the issue. Why is this important public issue not discussed in the ongoing Budget session of the ALA (Assam Legislative Assembly)? We are also surprised at the indifferent role of Local MLA (Member of Legislative Assembly) Atul Bora.

"We demand that the government must withdraw its decision on the shifting of the dumping ground. The government must take steps to rejuvenate the sick industries in the larger Chandrapur area. Steps must be also initiated at the earliest to make the Chandrapur area a tourist-destination spot."

At the press meet, the 'Dumping Ground Birodhi Mancha, Chandrapur' declared their agitational programme for the following week. On July 26, they will observe 'Black Day' to be followed by a cycle rally on July 27; sports persons will stage protest on July 28; Gherao of Chandrapur Revenue Circle office on July 29; a human chain on July 30; protests by villagers in e-rickshaws on August 1; 'padayatra' on August 2.
