GUWAHATI: The LDP Yuva Morcha has opposed the EIA (Environment Impact Assessment) -2020 and said that it will give permission for setting up of industries and projects in the forests of the country.
Asserting that the draft is against the interests of Assam and the North East, the Yuva Morcha stated, "The government may decide to set up an enterprise or project within 100 km from any international border and there will be no public hearing. The proposed distance is 100 km and the draft refers to 100 km aerial distance only. In addition, as per the proposal in the draft, regularization of projects set up in the forest in violation of the rules has been proposed so far. As a result, many illegal enterprises will become legal."
Ashrini Borah, assistant secretary media, Yuva Morcha said, "It increases validity of environment clearances allowing projects to secure land for long durations even when they are not constructed and it promotes land grab and not development."
It alleged that by suppressing the voice of the people, the government is arbitrarily looting resources and ensuring the interests of outsiders and capitalists.
"In addition, the Central Government has taken a completely unconcerned stand, knowing that the ecosystem of Assam and the North East will be completely destroyed," Borah added.
Chandropol Baruah, president of the Yuva Morcha said it is a terrible warning for Assam and the North East and it could not be accepted for any reason. He stressed that this proposal of the government would push the non-residents to the brink of extinction and the resources of Assam and the asset of North East could be easily acquired by outsiders.
