Fake encounters: Government files affidavit in Gauhati High Court

GUWAHATI: The Assam Government on Tuesday filed an affidavit in Gauhati High Court on the alleged fake encounters orchestrated by Assam Police since May last year.

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) (86/2021) had been filed by Arif Md Yeasin Jwadder under Article 226 of the Constitution of India in Gauhati High Court to issue an appropriate writ or order or direction calling for the records on "fake encounter killings" by police personnel.

After the court directed the Assam Government to file a detailed affidavit, the government submitted the affidavit on Tuesday. In the affidavit it is mentioned that 28 persons have died and 79 injured in encounters by the police.

The petitioner later said that all details in every case have not been provided in the affidavit.
