GUWAHATI: The first lunar eclipse of the year 2023 occurred on Friday. The penumbral eclipse started at around 8:44 p.m. on May 5 and ended at 1:01 a.m. on May 6. The eclipse was at its maximum at 10:52 p.m. in Guwahati and was visible in India.

The lunar eclipse was visible from Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa, the Atlantic, the Indian Ocean, and Antarctica, depending on the weather conditions across these locations. When the earth comes between the sun and the moon, a lunar eclipse takes place. It can be a total lunar eclipse, a partial lunar eclipse, or a penumbral lunar eclipse. A penumbral lunar eclipse occurs when the sun, earth, and moon are imperfectly aligned, and the earth blocks some of the sun's light from directly reaching the moon's surface and covers all or part of the moon with the outer part of its shadow.
