Formation of 3 autonomous councils: Dispur in dilemma

GUWAHATI: The State government has been really on the horns of a dilemma between three problematic options on the formation of the three newly-created autonomous councils – the Matak Autonomous Council (MAC), Kamatapur Autonomous Council (KAC) and the Moran Autonomous Council (MAC).

The three options open for the State government in the creation of the three autonomous council are – it can form the interim councils but that may offend large sections of people of the respective communities alleging biased selection, or it can go for election to the three autonomous councils in early 2021 but that may prove dearly at a time when the corona pandemic is still an endemic to reckon with or it may wait for the next government in the State that may come by May 21, 2021.

According to official sources, the State government has been weighing all the three options, but has not been able to clinch the final decision as yet. Sources that the situation is tilting towards the option of waiting for the next government to come as the incumbent government is not in a mood to take the blame of being biased or the corona pandemic taking its toll on the people of the state in the event of conducting elections to the three autonomous councils.

It's worth mentioning here that the Matak Autonomous Council and the Moran Autonomous Councils are of 25 members each with the direct election of 22 members and three nominations by the Governor. The Kamatapur Autonomous Council, on the other hand, is a 30-member house with direct election of 26 members and four nominations by the Governor.
