Former AGP Minister Biraj Sarma No More, Cremated At Nabagraha Crematorium

GUWAHATI: Former AGP minister Biraj Kumar Sarma, who was one of the signatories of the Assam Accord, passed away at a nursing home in Guwahati on Tuesday. His mortal remains were cremated at Nabagraha Crematorium with state honours on Wednesday. He was 70. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.

Late Biraj Sarma was one of the vice presidents of the regional party. His mortal remains were first taken from his Rajgarh residence in Guwahati to Pub Guwahati Bihu Sanmilan office, Silpukhuri Rajohuwa Naamghar, AGP headquarters at Ambari, Kumar Bhaskar Natya Mandir at Uzan Bazar and then to Nabagraha Crematorium.

All paid his their last respects. The AGP is observing mourn for three days during which the of the party will remain half mast. Party president Atul Bora, founder president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta and others paid their last respects to the departed leader with party flag. They recalled his contribution during the Assam Agitation.

AASU adviser in chief Samujjal Bhattacharjya paid last respects to the departed leader at his residence.

Late Biraj Sarma was MLA twice from Pub Guwahati LAC and he was minister in both the terms.

Meanwhile, Assam Governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi condoled the death of former minister Biraj Kumar Sarma and termed his death as a loss to the state.

In a condolence message here on Wednesday, Prof, Mukhi said that Biraj Kumar Sarma had been a witness of several socio-economic and political developments of the state. “Grieved to learn that the leader is no more”, the Governor added.

“I pray to the Almighty for eternal peace of the departed soul”. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal also mourned the death of former minister. In a statement today Chief Minister Sonowal said the death of Biraj Sarmah is a great loss to the political spectrum of the state. During his long political career, he contributed immensely to the cause of public life of the state. He was also instrumental in getting the Assam Accord signed in 1985. His death is a great loss to the socio-economic and political life of the state and is bound to create void which will be difficult to be filled. He also expressed his sympathy to the bereaved family and prayed to the Almighty for eternal peace of the departed soul.

Chief Minister’s media advisor Hrishikesh Goswami also mourned the demise of Biraj Sarmah.

Industries and Commerce Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary has deeply condoled the demise of former minister Biraj Sarmah.

In a condolence statement, Minister Patowary stated, ‘A popular leader of the Assam Movement, Biraj Sarmah was known for his political acumen and straightforwardness. As a public representative in the Assam Legislative Assembly, he always stood for the best democratic practices.’
