GUWAHATI: Court of the Special Judge here, on Thursday, granted bail to Rakesh Paul — former Chairman of APSC (Assam Public Service Commission) in a case registered by the CID (Criminal Investigation Department).

A case — 27/2018 — was registered against the former APSC chairman following allegations that he had demanded Rs 10 lakh from APSC candidate Shon Kumar Baishya. Lodging the complaint against Paul, Baishya said that he even gave Rs 5,50,000 to Paul.

The Special Court mandated that Paul will have to go on bail for Rs 50,000 with two sureties of like amount. The Court also directed Paul not to leave the jurisdiction of Kamrup (M) without prior written permission from the Court; and surrender the passport before the Court.

Notably on June 24, the Special Court had framed charge against Rakesh Paul under Sections 7 and 13(2) of the 'Prevention of Corruption Act' along with Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code.

Paul has already served judicial custody for more than two-and-half years in this case.

However, sources informed that Paul is yet to get bail in a case registered against him in Bhangagarh Police Station here.
