GUWAHATI: Noted writer, columnist, economist, and former director of the State Bank of India (SBI), Ananta Kalita, breathed his last at a private hospital around 7 in the morning. He was 76 years old when he died, and he is survived by his wife, daughters, relatives, and beloved ones. His last rites were performed in Navagraha. He died due to suffering from incurable seizures.

The Chief Minister condoled his demise and said through X (formerly known as Twitter): "The news of the passing away of eminent economist, writer, and former Director of the Central Board of the State Bank of India, Anant Kalita, is saddened. Anant Kalita presented important analysis on various aspects of the economic sector through his writings. I wish him eternal peace and extend my deepest condolences to his bereaved family."

Anant Kalita was born on July 30, 1947, at Kamarkuchi in the Borbhag area of Nalbari district. After completing his education, he joined the post and telegraph department. After resigning from the post and telegraph department, he joined SBI in April 1972. From 1986 to 1989, he was the president of the SBI staff association. From 1989 until 2008, he was the general secretary of the SBI staff association. He was the director of SBI's board of directors from 2001 to 2008. As a government employee, he was also attracted to politics, and in 1968 he joined the CPI (M). He was the president of the Natun Sahitya Parishad. He wrote various significant books like Samakalin Orthoniti: Bikolpo Anbekhon, 'Asom aru Asomor Jatiya Somosya,' 'Nobya Udar Orthoniti aru Bikolpo', 'Biswayito Samajkhonor Bhinno Sinta' and others.

His body was brought to his residence in Sarumotoria, where various people and organizations condoled his demise. The body was taken in a vehicle decorated with flowers to the office of Natun Sahitya Parishad, then to the state office of CPI (M), and also to the office of the SBI staff association at Panbazaar, where people offered tribute. After that, the body was taken to the cemetery.
