Free two kg sugar for tea workers on cards

GUWAHATI: The State Food and Civil Supplies department is contemplating on giving two kg of sugar free of cost to each tea workers' family per month.

The move was taken earlier also but the department couldn't initiate it due to some problems in procurement of sugar. The objective of the scheme is to make tea workers do away with the habit of salt intake along with tea. This habit creates problems for women during pregnancy.

Now the Department has asked the deputy commissioners of the respective districts to inform it the feasibility of procuring sugar from the market to supply them to tea workers' families. The scheme will see light of the day only if it is done by February after which the model code of conduct of the Assembly election will be imposed.
