‘Gagana’ a Mumbai-based socio-cultural organization celebrates Bihu

GUWAHATI: ‘Gagana,’ a Mumbai-based socio-cultural organization of the Assamese people residing in the western suburbs of Mumbai, celebrated Rongali Bihu with pomp and gaiety in complete traditional style in the Lata Mangeshkar Natyagriha, Mira Road, recently. The grand celebration began with the lighting of the traditional lamp by Maharashtra Superintendent of Police Sishir Jain and his wife, Bollywood actress Rajni Basumatari, socialist Jutika Mahanta, and enchanting actress Urmila Mahanta from Assam. This was followed by a colourful programme that included bihu geet by famous Marathi singer Ragini, directed by music producer Dony Hazarika. On the other hand, the folk enjoyed the variety in tune of dhol, pepa, gagana, and dances of all tribes of Assam, along with Bengali dance drama and Lavni of Maharashtra. Miju Gitashree, who acclaimed her name as “Kompito Madhav” in the Assamese music industry, added beauty to the show with her melodious voice, a press release said.

Popular Assamese personalities like Debojit Changmai, Amrit Pritam, and many non-Assamese people also participated in the celebration and showed their love for bihu. It is to be mentioned that the best wishes letter from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma and also from the Chairman and Managing Director of Pride East Entertainment Private Limited, Riniki Bhuyan, added encouragement to the people residing here to celebrate Bihu with vigour.
