Gambling activities during Diwali in Guwahati city

GUWAHATI: Gambling is extremely popular during Diwali. It is believed that playing cards on the festival of lights not only impresses Goddess Lakshmi but also ensures her goodwill.

Diwali celebrations were low-key in the last two years due to the pandemic. However, there is a lot of excitement among people this year. Although heavy rainfall has affected the celebrations in some way, it has not hindered the gambling activities. Sources said that many rich and affluent people indulged in card games like Teen Patti and dice games like Jhandi Munda in some of the expensive and luxury hotels of the city on Monday night.

On the other hand, gambling activities were also reported from areas like Noonmati, Bamunimaidam, Bhangagarh, Paltan Bazar, Hatigaon, Sijubari, Maligaon, Pandu and Jalukbari in the city. This despite the fact that police have intensified their drive against gambling activities during Diwali. Teer gambling is also rampant.
