Gauhati University issues SOP for final semester exams. Check details here

Guwahati: Assam's Gauhati University (GU) has released a Standard Operating Procedure (SoP) for conducting the final semester examinations in the month of September.

As per the notification, the intermediate semester students will be promoted to the next level based on internal assessment marks. In the case of the students in the intermediate semester who have submitted their examination forms before the last date, the internal assessment marks and theory mark in the earlier semester subjects will be considered for the evaluation.

The final semester students, however, shall have to sit for the examinations and shall be graded using a 50-50 formula. 

As per the statement, the GU final semester examinations shall be conducted in both online as well as offline modes in order to maintain 'COVID-19 protocol', and the relevant SOP published by the UGC for the purpose is followed.

What is the 50-50 Evaluation formula?

As per the official notification, the final semester exam question papers will cover the whole syllabus but the students will be required to attempt questions for 50 percent marks only while the remaining 50 percent marks will be calculated on the basis of internal assessment.

"The question paper(s) for offline examinations will cover the whole syllabus but the students need to attempt questions for 50 percent marks only," the notification issued by the GU controller of examinations read.

It may be recalled here that University Grants Commission had earlier last month released guidelines for the universities and colleges to conduct the final semester examinations for the students. The UGC has provided the colleges a timeline until September 30, 2020, to complete the final semester examinations for the students. The UGC has also provided the universities with the option of conducting the exams in the offline, online, or both the modes as per the decision of the respective institutions.

This decision was met with widespread protests from students across the nation, who claim that conducting exams in the midst of the pandemic situation might put the lives of the students in jeopardy.
