Gauhati University NSS Cell celebrates 'Youth Day' virtually

GUWAHATI: The NSS (National Service Scheme) Cell of GU (Gauhati University) celebrated the 'International Youth Day' through a webinar on August 12.

Inaugurating the webinar Prof. Pratap Jyoti Handique, V.C., G.U said that the 'International Youth Day' is celebrated for empowering the youths to contribute to the society and for encouraging youths to raise awareness to solve issues affecting the youths.

Jayanta Malla Baruah, Political Secretary to the Chief Minister of Assam, graced the programme as the Chief Guest. Speaking on the occasion, he said that the youths must contribute to create a self-reliant India and Assam as envisaged by the Prime Minister of India. He urged the youths to involve themselves — besides in education – also in agriculture, tea industry, marketing and other fields to create 'Atmanirbhar Bharat'.

In this context, Baruah cited the instance of Olympic Bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain who has made all of us proud and become a role model for the youths.

Attending as the Guest of Honour, Kumar Padmapani Bora, Deputy Secretary to the Government of India, Ministry of Textiles, New Delhi focused on this year's theme 'Transforming Food Systems: Youth Innovation for Human and Planetary Health'. He also said that by being innovative, the youths can become self-reliant and also usher in sustainable development.

Participating in the webinar, Dipak Kumar — Regional Director, NSS, NER — said that the youths hold the key to the future. Hence, the youths must be educated and skilled to contribute to the society.

Earlier welcoming the guests and participants, Dr Ranjan Kr. Kakati, DSW, GU, said that the youths have a major role to play for attaining sustainable development goals as declared by the UNO.

Dr Mitali Kathkatia, NSS, PO, D.K. Girls' College, Mirza delivered the vote of thanks. About 200 participants comprising of NSS volunteers, Programme Officers, faculties and members of G.U. fraternity attended the webinar, stated a press release.
