GUWAHATI: The World Day Against Child Labour was observed by Gauhati University NSS Cell on Saturday along with the rest of the world.

As a part of programme a webinar was organised by GU NSS Cell to mark the occasion. Inaugurating the webinar as Chief Guest Pabitra Ram Khaund, Director, Sports & Youth Welfare, Govt. of Assam said that Child labour is a serious issue and there is need to create awareness in the society to eradicate child labour.

Khound also said that all the stake holders such as district task force, child welfare officers, district administration, NSS volunteers should come together for effective handling of the situation. He further said that since NSS plays an important role in the society its volunteers should sensitise the people, parents, employers against child labour.

IndraniPhukanTahbildar, former member of Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights & Chief Advisor, Destination attended the programme as Resource Person and in her speech said that due to poverty and economic status many children are forced into child labour.

Tahbildar mentioned rules from the Indian constitution which grants children rights against all kind of discriminations and right to free and compulsory education. She spoke about rescue and rehabilitation of victims of child labour.

Earlier welcoming the guest and participants Dr. Ranjan Kr. Kakati, Director, Students' Welfare, G.U. & Programme Coordinator, NSS Cell in his speech said that children from marginalised section of the society are deprived of education and a chance for a bright future due to child labour. Dr. Kakati further said we need to find ways to eliminate child labour as early as possible and create a Jana Andolan to create awareness against child labour. Dr. Kakati also expressed hope that all the NSS units under GU NSS Cell will make their adopted villages free from child labour. Dr Rituparna Bora, NSS PO, GU Unit offered vote of thanks. About 250 persons comprising NSS Programme Officers, volunteers and GU fraternity attended the webinar.
