GUWAHATI: It is after the latest guidelines issued by the UGC (University Grants Commission) on holding final year university examinations, the student community from across the State is opposing it. It seems the student community of Assam is not ready to sit for the examination as per UGC guidelines that have led the students to oppose the examinations, besides making appeal to the respective officials and ministers for an alternative decision.

Opposing the same, Moon Talukdar, general Secretary of the Gauhati University Post Graduate Students' Union said that this is not the right time to issue such guidelines as the students are already tired of dealing with different issues amidst the pandemic. Talukdar said, "I urge the UGC to cancel the decision of conducting examinations before September 30 as its guidelines. The people of Assam are already fighting with the global pandemic. The flood adds to our difficulties." He said that at this situation the UGC guidelines can be termed as nothing but exerting mental pressure on the students which will harm them as no one can ignore the difficulty that the people of Assam are currently going through while fighting the global pandemic and the natural disaster at the same time.

Giving reasons to the Union's decision of opposing the UGC guidelines, Talukdar said, "How will the students sit for the examination without proper classes. Though the students received online classes, but this can't be a reason as all of us are well aware of the fact that online classes couldn't reach many of the students having no access to internet."

"The examinations must be conducted only after one month of offline classes when the situation gets stabilized. I urge the authority to look into the matter of promoting students to the next semester and to look for some special arrangements for those students having backlog in their previous examinations," he added.
