GUWAHATI: In a situation where the city has been in the news for shortage of water as well as floodwaters, as many as five hundred students and youths came out to the streets to observe the event of Global Climate Strike as part of the movement called 'Fridays for Future' inspired by 16-year-old Swedish girl, Greta Thunberg.
The strikers rallied from Dighalipukhuri via Cotton University and the Gauhati High Court. Arriving back to the park from where day started the rally, they performed various music parodies and read out their demands which included – Implement Solid Waste Management Rules 2016, Implement ban on single-use plastics, Construct sewage treatment plant for Bharalumunkh, urgently form Wetland authority, Declare Climate Emergency and many other demands.
It is to be mentioned that these silent protesters of Guwahati on every Friday have been warning about the alarming state of the environment through different approaches like solo strikes, face painting, mass strikes and movie screenings etc.
