GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has extended the date for paying pending property tax till January 31, 2023.

The GMC has associated with the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) whereby the latter will assist in ascertaining the exact number of land-holders in the city. This step was necessiated as the GMC is losing substantial revenue each year due to lack of updated data regarding the actual number of land-holders who are eligible to pay property tax. Accordingly, the GMC directed property owners to link their holding number with their APDCL customer number and to pay their pending property tax by December 31, 2022 to avoid electricity disconnection.

The GMC has now extended the date for clearing property tax to January 31, 2023. Property owners have been asked to clear their pending property taxes by January 31, 2023. The GMC had initially given some relief to property owners who have not paid their property taxes for years by announcing a 50 per cent waiver on the total dues. Now, the GMC has declared a 30 per cent waiver on the total dues if property owners pay their pending property tax by January 1, 2023.

On the other hand, in order to keep the city beautiful and clean, the GMC conducted a drive in the past few days and removed 5,000 unauthorized hoardings across the city. GMC officials said that all unauthorized hoardings in the city would be removed as well as posters and bills on light posts, walls etc. They further urged people to refrain from pasting small posters and bills on walls and bus stops else they would be fined.

"People think that the posters are small and will not make much of a difference. But this time we will be strict and we will fine people for pasting posters and bills," they said.
