Guwahati: Riding on high confidence after triumph in the Punjab Assembly elections, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has fielded 40 candidates in the April 22 elections to the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC).

Notably, the party is mulling to expand its base in the northeast following the success in two municipal wards in Lakhimpur and Tinsukia districts in the last month's civic polls.

AAP's Assam state coordinator, Bhaben Chowdhury on Monday asserted that the party has fielded candidates in 40 of the total of 60 GMC wards and it would form the board by winning a majority of the seats.

While appreciating his party, Chowdhury also said that Delhi Chief Minister and National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal has been promoting morality in politics and such principles would facilitate the party to expand its base in Assam and other northeastern states.

A few days back, AAP had announced its first list of candidates for the upcoming GMC elections.

The party will contest in all the 60 wards with 99 percent of candidates to be picked from among the residents of respective wards.

In a bid to reach the masses of Guwahati, AAP has already started its digital campaign such as sending messages via digital platforms.

In the recently held Assam civil polls, AAP too entered the northeast as it made its debut with two seats after Delhi, Punjab, and Gujarat.

The AAP candidate Dhiraj Kumar Singh won from ward no 11 in Tinsukia while Udita Das won from Ward no 14 in Lakhimpur.

Singh, who won by 183 votes defeated Hemant Sharma who is a former Vice Chairman of the Tinsukia Municipal Board and four-time ward commissioner.

On the other hand, Udita Das also won with a huge margin of votes.

Apart from these two candidates, two other AAP candidates named Prerna Karnani and Priya Malakar stood second inwards number 6 and 7.
