GUWAHATI: On the second day of the Third Guwahati International Film Festival (GIFF) organized by Jyoti Chitraban in association with Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Regional Film and Television Institute, chief guest of the festival, Krzysztof Zanussi held a session with the media on Friday.
When Krzysztof Zanussi, the phenomenal Polish filmmaker is in the room, it is assured that one will come out richer in knowledge, wisdom and fresh insights about myriad issues related to film, philosophy and politics.
Octogenarian Zanussi, now a bridge between the past heritage of cinema and contemporary cinema, while addressing the media on Friday said, “Unlike popular belief, what is crucial is not the number of people that went to watch a movie but the number of people influenced by the movie. When a filmmaker understands this, it makes a dramatic difference in the quality of his films. Rather than making films dramatic, focus should be on making it realistic.”
“It is rather interesting to note that Indian cinema is probably the only one that keeps its own aesthetics based on Sanskrit drama and not on Greek drama. It is very exotic to us and at the same time original. I would say preserve it as far as you can try to make it more sophisticated which the Mumbai commercial films have managed to capture but regional films that would reflect the same great tradition of unique story telling different from the European style of films,” said Zanussi.
He concluded with a message to the aspiring filmmakers, “Be realistic. Assess the situation clearly and correctly. Go crazy and make what you are most passionate about.”
