Guwahati: 2 nurses in Maligaon's Central Hospital test COVID-19 positive

Guwahati: The indoor services in the Central Hospital of the Northeast Frontier Railway in Maligaon, Guwahati, have been closed for 48 hours (from July 1 to July 2) after two nurses of the hospital tested COVID-19 positive.

The order to close the services was issued by Dr. N Deka, the Additional CMD, TA, who stated that this decision has been taken as both the nurses were engaged in duties in different wards including the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Central Hospital.

The indoor services have been closed as per COVID norms for intensive cleaning and sanitization, informed Deka. "Services like emergency OT, casualty, and other OPD services (including radiology, pathology, and blood bank) will remain functional as decided by the administration", he added.

This development has been reported amid a massive boom in the number of COVID-19 positive cases in Guwahati, which has been termed as "critical" by none other than health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma himself. At the same time, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, taking cognizance of the matter, has urged the state government to ramp up the number of tests conducted. Meanwhile, in an attempt to arrest the rate at which the virus is spreading, the Assam Government has clamped a lockdown in Guwahati which will last up to July 12 next.

The state has so far reported 8,955 cases of the virus, out of which 3,109 cases are active. As many as 12 people in the state have died due to virus-related complications. Meanwhile, the situation in Guwahati has taken a rather grim turn, as 378 COVID-19 positive cases were registered within 24 hours on Wednesday, June 1.
