Guwahati: A 60-year-old man was apprehended for allegedly raping a minor girl in Guwahati's Noonmati area on Monday.
As per reports, the incident occurred when the girl was alone at her home as her parents had gone out for work.
Taking advantage of the same, the accused identified as Dwijen Ramsiyari, got inside the house and allegedly committed the heinous crime.
Later, as the parents came back, the girl apprised them of the crime following which they registered a police complaint against Ramsiyari.
Acting on the complaint, the police arrested the accused based on the complaint and registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO), 2012.
The state is witnessing a rise in crime against women as every alternative day such incidents are coming to the fore. In one of such incidents, a woman lodged an FIR in Demow Police Station one-and-half months ago that when her husband was not at home, one Karan Mirdha, an inhabitant of Rajmai Tea Estate, allegedly tortured and raped her.
In the FIR, the victim also stated that two Police Officers at Demow Police Station were harassing her by calling her to the police station again and again. On June 1, the victim submitted a copy of the FIR to the Deputy Commissioner of Sivasagar district, Superintendent of Police of Sivasagar district, and Demow Circle Officer.
The SP directed the Demow Police to take action in this case. Finally, after a month and a half, Demow Police registered a case and arrested accused Karan Mirdha on Thursday afternoon.
In another such incident, a law student and his accomplice allegedly attempted to rape a pregnant woman in the Satgaon area in Guwahati on July 23.
The incident came to light after the woman's husband had lodged a complaint at Satgaon police station.
The woman stated in her complaint that two youths made an attempt to rape her while she was bringing clothes from the terrace of her building. She was alone on the day of the incident.
