GUWAHATI: Residents of Silpukhuri in Guwahati were in for a harrowing time as yet another bursting of a water pipe occurred in the area, creating panic as water gushed out.
The early morning incident in Silpukhuri area occurred after similar incidents in Kharghuli and Rajgarh recently.
Local residents informed that the mishap happened at around 6 AM on Sunday morning, resulting in flooding of the entire area in the vicinity with water discharged from the pipe.
Some residents were unhappy and frustrated as the staff of the water board did not respond promptly, although they were informed immediately after the water pipe burst.
Pedestrian and vehicular traffic movement was affected in the area due to the water inundating roads and bye lanes in the area. People stepping out of their homes for a spot of Sunday shopping were heard voicing concern about the mishap.
People are hoping that prompt efforts will be made to resolve the situation and provide succor to the affected residents in the area.
The recurring incidents have also led to concerns about the worsening condition of infrastructure in the city. The residents of the city have been calling for prompt action on the part of the authorities in addressing the oft-happening incidents of water pipes bursting in different parts of the city.
There is also frustration at the failure of the government to provide clean drinking water through the several water supply schemes in the city that have been in the works for quite some time now. Despite frequent promises by the government and the water board, no results are being seen in delivery of piped water to households, except in a few areas.
In an earlier incident on June 23, a water pipe burst in the Borbari locality of the city, adjacent to Hengerabari.
Even though the pipe burst didn’t prove to be lethal, the frequent recurrence of similar incidents has been continuing despite the government’s pledges to curb the happening of such mishaps.
Before the incident at Borbari, a water pipeline of the Guwahati Jal Board that was recently installed burst at Rajgarh Road near Commerce College Link Road. Copious amounts of water leaked out, leading to flooding of the road. Property worth lakhs of rupees were damaged although there were no reports of injuries or casualties sustained in the incident.
