Guwahati Child Abuse Case: Child Welfare Files FIR against Doctor Couple, Dr Waliul Islam & Caretaker Arrested, Wife Absconding

GUWAHATI: A horrific incident came to light on Friday when an FIR was filed against Dr. Waliul Islam and his wife, Dr. Sangeeta Dutta, who was accused of child abuse. According to reports, both of the prominent doctors had been abusing their minor daughter for a long period.

According to reports, the pair repeatedly tied the minor to a pole on the house's roof in the sweltering heat as punishment. Suspiciously, the couple initially claimed to have adopted the child, but later claimed that the child was theirs and that they had done IVF procedures.

Dr Waliul Islam and their caretaker were detained on Saturday, while Dr Sangeeta Dutta is still on the run. The police detained the husband and the care giver for additional interrogation.

After receiving many complaints from sources, Child Rights campaigner and chief of the child rights organization, UTSAH, Miguel Das Queah, posted about the incident on Facebook, and a neighbour also contacted authorities about the couple's callous act.

It is vital to remember that Dr Waliul Islam has already been jailed for child abuse. In 2017, he was accused of child abuse and had to appear before the Child Protection Commission, where a court decided against him.

The accused, on the other hand, were scheduled to appear in court on Saturday after being charged under multiple sections.

Dr Sangeeta Dutta, who is now on the run, went on Facebook Live earlier on Friday night, stating that the charges against the pair are untrue and that people are attempting to frame them both. She later took the video for unknown reasons.

Assam Minister Ajanta Neog stated in 2021 that the government is doing everything possible to control crime against children in Assam, but the Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (ASCPCR) registered 95 cases for the protection of child rights in 2016, 101 cases in 2017, 157 cases in 2018, 149 cases in 2019, 116 cases in 2020, and 54 such cases this year as of July 15.

Neog spoke at a National Level Consultation on Child Rights, with a particular emphasis on Substance Abuse and Child Trafficking. People should have a moral responsibility to safeguard children, according to the Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (ASCPCR) at Assam Administrative Staff College.
