GUWAHATI: Although multiple restrictions have been implemented over time, the lifeline of the public transportation system in Guwahati remains to be the city busses. However, city buses are responsible most of the traffic woes in the city. The stops and the turns taken by these vehicles on the relatively narrow streets of the city often trigger traffic woes.

One of the key concerns is the Adabari bus terminus that handles a large number of buses arriving in the city from Lower Assam, apart from being a waiting point for the city busses. The movement of the buses at this location often triggers traffic congestion, creating problems for other vehicles.

Apart from these, the city buses seem to stop way beyond the stipulated time at a few bus stops of the city, causing a pileup of buses, ultimately leading to congestion. This is often noticed at the Six Mile and Ganeshguri bus stops.

Another key cause of the congestion is the unruly stopping of these city buses at bus stops. It has become the habit of some drivers not to stop near the pavement, but at a distance of 5 to 10 feet from the same in a bid to block other buses coming from behind. This leads to the blocking of both lanes, triggering massive congestion.

In view of such problems, a large number of citizens have demanded that strict action be taken to prevent such unruly behaviour of bus drivers.
