Guwahati: The district administration on Friday came down heavily on alleged illegal settlers at Silsako Beel (wetland) near the Chanchal area of VIP road as they carried out an eviction drive.

Reportedly, the Silsako Beel has been a favourite place for illegal settlers as it has been under their clutches for years following which the district administration carried out an eviction drive on 100 metres of illegally occupied government lands.

Reports also claimed that these illegal settlers had trespassed and grabbed a portion of the wetland by bounding the area with bamboo fencing.

Following such cases of trespassing, GMDA in 2014 had issued a notice for removing illegal encroachment in the Silsako Lake.

''Any person encroaching Silsako Beel is asked to vacate the land and remove any unauthorised structure immediately," a GMDA had stated in its notice then.

The notice further mentioned that the legal action would be initiated against those found violating the laws.

It had also been said that encroachment in the area is a criminal offence under Guwahati Water Bodies Preservation and Conservation Act 2008.
