Guwahati: GMDA Fires Gammon Engineers for Not Finishing Water Project

GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has terminated a contract awarded to Gammon Engineers and Contractors Private Limited more than a decade ago for the design and construction of a large water project in the city.

The company, earlier known as Gammon India Limited, was awarded the Rs 355-crore contract for the construction of the South West Guwahati Water project with a capacity of 107 million litres per day in 2009.

It was one of the four big water projects in the city.

It was one of the city's four major water projects, according to the contract terms, the contractor was expected to complete the work's execution and delivery within 30 months from the contract's conclusion, however, due to the contractor's inability to complete the project within 30 months and on the contractor's request, the GMDA granted several extensions.

Further, despite numerous extensions, the rate of work progress remained slow and the contractor failed to fulfil the contractual obligations.

"In spite of numerous extensions, the rate of progress of the work remained slow and the contractor failed to discharge the contractual obligations," GMDA CEO Kaushar Hillaly.

According to the CEO, the contractor has yet again failed to reach the deadline. Besides, he said the work has remained incomplete, despite the fact that the GMDA has paid all amounts due and payable to the contractor.

Earlier in the month of July, Guwahati Jal Board conducted the trial run of the JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency)-aided Guwahati Water Supply Project today, after almost a decade of the start of the project work.

Guwahati Jal Board launched its website and mobile App today for water connections. Willing consumers will get water supply within 21 days during the trial run if their applications get approval.

Initially, the project will cover only 3,000 households, with installation fees ranging from Rs 9,500 to Rs 12,500 per connection. The consumers will get water for two hours a day at the initial stage. The rates of water tariff slab-wise start from Rs 22 per 1,000 litres, and the proposed allotment of water is 135 litres per individual per day.
