Guwahati: Guwahati is expected to receive compressed natural gas (CNG) services for vehicles in the coming years.

The work on this project is likely to start within 7 to 8 months from now.

According to a media report, this was informed by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Purba Bharati Gas Limited, a joint venture of Assam Gas Company (AGC), Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL), and Oil India Limited (OIL).

Shri Abhijit Baruah, CEO of Purba Bharati Gas Limited said, "We intend to start three CNG stations in Guwahati. There will be a lot of background work and we are currently in talks with higher authorities, including the Indian Oil Corporation."

Another issue being discussed is the establishment of the mother station at Dibrugarh. Baruah further stated that there will be problems with operating costs from Dibrugarh, which is 400 km away from Guwahati." The project is expected to start within seven to eight months from now, according to the report.

Earlier in August 2019, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal took a step towards making Assam free from pollution and to encourage the use of clean and green fuel inaugurated the first-ever CNG fuelling stations in Dibrugarh which was set up by the AGCL near Assam State Transport Bus Terminus at Chowkidingi, Dibrugarh.

Assam is the second state in the north-eastern region after Tripura to have CNG facility.

CM Sonowal then said that to set up CNG fuel stations in all the districts of Assam the state government is preparing a roadmap.

CNG is an eco-friendly alternative to gasoline. Produced by compressing natural gas (methane) down to less than 1% of its volume, CNG fuel is safer than gasoline and diesel because it is non-toxic and does not contaminate groundwater. CNG fuel use is becoming more popular with both commercial and non-commercial vehicles.
