Guwahati lacks toilets for women

GUWAHATI: The government is not giving any importance for the basic amenities of women i.e. to build public toilets for women in Guwahati. Not a single toilet has been made especially for women in the city; as a result, thousands of women have to face problem everyday when they come out of their houses for day to day works.

Most of the women are hesitant to enter public toilets which are designed for both genders.

The toilets in the city are in deplorable condition due to lack of proper maintenance. The negligence of the general public is also a contributing factor to the condition of these toilets. As a result some of these toilets are being used a garbage dumps. Because of such unhygienic condition, males also feel hesitant to use public toilets.

Around two to three lakh people commute across the city every day and due to the less number of public toilets they are forced to urinate in open affecting the environment.

Ironically, posters and hoardings are being displayed at public places urging the public not to urinate at open spaces. However, firstly, the government should build sufficient number of public toilets in the city.
