Guwahati: Landslides Killed One Person In Noonmati

Guwahati: One person lost his life in a landslide that reportedly occurred at the Bhabanipur area in Noonmati here on Wednesday.

As per reports, the deceased was identified as Prakash Deka.

Following the incessant rainfall in Assam, people here are witnessing landslides each alternate day. However, not only Assam but Arunachal Pradesh too witnessing the same.

Reportedly, a total of 79 persons died due to landslides in the State in the last six-and-a-half years, out of which as many as 22 deaths occurred in Kamup (M) district alone. With this figure, Kamrup (M) has topped the list of landslide-related deaths in the State during the last six-and-a-half years with 22 casualties.

During this period, the highest number of 26 human casualties across the state due to landslides was registered in 2020, with four deaths in Kamrup (M). In 2016, the statewide death toll was 20, with six deaths in Kamrup (M) while in 2017, the statewide death toll was two, with no death in Kamrup (M).

In 2018, the statewide death toll was eight, with three deaths in Kamrup (M) and in 2019, the lone death due to landslides occurred in Kamrup (M).

On the other hand, in 2021, the statewide death toll was five statewide, with four of the deaths occurring in Kamrup (M).

It may be mentioned that Karimganj comes second in the list of landslide-related deaths in the State during this period with 16 deaths, while Hailakandi comes third with 15 deaths and Cachar comes next with 14 deaths.

Meanwhile, in the past couple of days, following the incessant rain, landslides have occurred at several places in the state capital and adjoining areas like Papum Pare District in Arunachal Pradesh.

So far, three persons have lost their lives while two others have gone missing.

With Tuesday's death, landslide and flood-related casualties in the state rose to 15 since April this year.
