Guwahati: In an unfortunate incident, a leopard cub was killed in a road accident at Rajiv Nagar in the Kahilipara area of Guwahati on June 29.

An unknown vehicle driver struck the cub leopard and this collision led to its death. The incident occurred at around 10:15 pm when the leopard was crossing the road.

It has been suspected that the leopard's age was around one-and-a-half-year.

Soon after receiving the information, a team of forest officials immediately rushed to the site of the incident and recovered the body.

The impact of the collision was so much so that the face of the leopard ended up getting severely crushed and it succumbed to its injuries and died on the spot.

Earlier, in a similar incident, at least four animals including a leopard were killed on June 18 after a vehicle struck them at the NH37 in Kaziranga National Park.

According to the forest officials, the collision also led to the death of three hog deer along with the leopard.

The incident reportedly took place in the wee hours of June 18 when the animals made an attempt to shift to the highlands or the Karbi Hills so as to take shelter from the floods.

Meanwhile, despite persistent attempts made by the forest and transport departments to prevent such death, it still continues to take place and one major reason behind it seems to be ignorant drivers who flout the rules.
