Guwahati: In spite of the ongoing coronavirus crisis, the Assam government has decided to go ahead and launch what will be India's longest river Ropeway between Guwahati and North Guwahati.

On Saturday, the Assam Government announced that the ropeway service over the Brahmaputra between Guwahati and North Guwahati shall become operational from August 24 next.

As per reports, the ropeway service shall be launched by Assam's Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is also likely to be present at the event.

It is to be noted that the Guwahati-North Guwahati route will be the longest ropeway distance over a river in the entire country. This ropeway project has been built to connect main Guwahati with North Guwahati, and the total length of the ropeway will be 2 km. 35 passengers will be able to board at a time.

As per reports, CCTV cameras have been installed at the site for monitoring the ropeway service every single minute. The ropeway's ticket fare for one way will be Rs. 60, while, Rs.100 will be charged for a to and fro commute.

Earlier this year, Assam Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya announced that the construction of the first ropeway in the city was nearing completion.

"The work of the ropeway between Kachari in Guwahati and North Guwahati has been completed. I myself inspected the whole system today traveling from Kachari to North Guwahati through the ropeway during a trial run", the minister tweeted in Assamese.

The Minister believes the introduction of the ropeway shall reduce the travel time between Guwahati and North Guwahati.

The ropeway users will also be able to witness the beautiful landscapes of Guwahati city, river Brahmaputra, and the Umananda Temple.

The construction of the ropeway reportedly began in 2019. Although it was expected to be launched for the public from the month of Bohag, the launch has been delayed by the coronavirus pandemic.
