Guwahati: With the death of a 50-year-old man hailing from Fatasil Ambari area in Guwahati, the COVID-19 death toll in the Assam has risen to 12.

The man was rushed to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), but was pronounced dead upon arrival. A COVID-19 test was administered on the man, which revealed his positive status.

"I am sad to inform you that 50-year-old Mr. Dilip Talukdar of Fatasil Ambari, Guwahati was brought dead to GMCH on June 22. Subsequently, he was tested positive for #COVID19. With this, our death toll goes up to 12. My heartfelt condolences to the Talukdar family. Prayers", Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote on Twitter.

This follows the death of another man in Guwahati -- aged 45 -- who passed away due to complications on Sunday. Sarma informed on Twitter that the 45-year-old resident of Khanapara, Guwahati, died due to COVID-19 in GMCH and he was taken to the hospital late, in a critical state due to which doctors could not save him.

These two deaths, coming within a span of 48 hours, have been reported at a time when the citizenry is already at an edge due to a massive spike due in COVID-19 cases. This has prompted the authorities to clamp a lockdown across the city. Additionally, no one (except those carrying railway/flight tickets and coming for health purposes) shall be granted entry to the city during this lockdown phase that will last till July 12.
