GUWAHATI: The Veterinary Branch and Enforcement Branch of Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) along with the Assam Police conducted a joint inspection at different poultry and meat shops across Guwahati against the unhygienic sale of meat.

The inspection drive was carried out at Ganeshguri Bazar, Hatigaon Road, Bhetapara Ghoramara, Beharbari, Nalapara, Lakhra Bazar, Saukuchi, Lalganesh, Colony Bazar, Kalapahar, B.K. Kakati Road and Ulubari area of Guwahati.

The Guwahati Municipal Corporation stated that animals must be scientifically slaughtered at slaughterhouses to ensure the safe supply of healthy meat to the consumers. Animals slaughtered unscientifically release toxins that are quite harmful for consumption and can lead to serious health problems.

The laws set by GMC rule out open selling of meat but a few continue to sell meat unhygienically. During the inspection, the GMC seized around 80 kg of mutton from unauthorized meat shops and disposed of the same at Boragaon Dumping ground. Also, two meat shops were sealed as they could not produce any valid licence to the GMC authority. During the drive, an amount of Rs 20,500 was imposed as a penalty.
