Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) Up Against Illegal Street Vendors, 100 Shops Removed

GUWAHATI: A joint eviction drive was conducted by a team of Enforcement Branch, Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), led by Aditya Gogoi, Municipal Secretary & i/c Collector (Enforcement Branch) in coordination with District Administration, Kamrup (M), and the commissioner of Police, Guwahati City against illegal street vendors and hawkers in the footpaths and pavements of Fancy Bazar area mainly: S.S. Road, M.S. Road, T.R.P. Road, Kedar Road, Chamber Road, etc.

Approximately 100 numbers of encroachers were evicted during the process. The evicted drive was carried out based on multiple public complaints received by GMC from time to time. It aimed mainly at clearing the traffic congestion created by the street vendors and hawkers that often cause overcrowding on footpaths and pavements and, at times, even violate social distancing norms. It may lead to further spread of Covid-19 as the Fancy Bazar area has huge potential of becoming a Covid-19 hotspot.

At first, mic announcements were made, but as there was no response from the encroachers, an eviction drive was conducted in the interest of public service.

Also, the trade license of different shops was checked and penalties were imposed accordingly where irregularities were found.

Notably, approximately 40 MCPs carried out an eviction drive at B.K. Kakoty Road here in Guwahati on Thursday.

During the process, approximately 50 street vendors and hawkers illegally encroaching the streets, footpaths and pavements were evicted. Prior to this eviction drive, prior announcements were made on July 7 in the area asking the people concerned to evacuate the place.
