Guwahati - North Guwahati Night Ferry To Kick Off From Today

Guwahati: Assam has launched the Night Navigation Mobile Application in rivers, thereby becoming the first state in the country to have introduced this service.

The Night Navigation for ferry services based in Guwahati has been ceremonially launched by chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at Assam Administrative Staff College on February 19.

An official statement stated that this landmark has been achieved in collaboration with K Raju, the principal scientist at IIT Madras. The draft of the Brahmaputra river was surveyed thoroughly, after which, the mobile application was developed.

The first night journey of the Inland Water Transport (IWT) ferry between Guwahati to North Guwahati will commence from February 19 at 9 pm.

The CM informed that due to the Night Navigation Mobile Application, the night ferry service will be able to operate in places like Jorhat, Dhubri among others. He also added that the ferry services can operate during the night hours unlike in the past.

Earlier, The chief minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma had said that his government would soon start night super from Majuli via Lakhimpur Boginadi.

"I have also ordered to run Ro-pax ferry for the convenience of the commuters," the CM said adding that the service will be available three times a day including 9 AM, 11.30 AM, and 3 PM.

"Some rules have also been implemented for the boat service and the commuters have to follow the same. It has also been decided that a mobile application will be used from September 22 and passengers can book their tickets from home," he added.

Further, the Assam CM informed that a total of 8 ferries will run in Majuli and also informed that ferry tickets would be available online by end of this month.

As per CM Sarma, for the remaining eight ferries in Majuli, marine engines were ordered which will take up to 50-60 days to arrive and till then those eight boats will remain suspended from operating.
