GUWAHATI: Rain may bring relief from the heat but for the people of Guwahati, rains are a source of horror as it leads to flooding in several parts of the city. As the people of several parts of the city are held hostage because of similar flooding, citizens have raised questions regarding the work done by the concerned departments over the years to resolve this problem.

A weather disturbance had led to rains and thunderstorms in several parts of the state, including the capital city over the last few days. The medium to heavy rains in the city on Wednesday first filled the drainage system of the city to its full capacity, and thereafter caused them to overflow. This led to the beginning of the flooding issue in the city. And when the rains continued on Thursday, they were no longer in a position to handle the water, leading to massive urban flooding on Friday.

Even though, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation and state administration had mentioned several times that action has been taken to prevent urban flooding, these rains proved that those statements carried no weightage. They had mentioned that crores of rupees had been utilised to buy equipment, hire experts, and create infrastructure to relieve people from the same, but 2-3 days of rains proved them completely wrong.

On the morning of Friday, a large number of Guwahatians woke up to see that their residences and businesses were flooded overnight. And for many more, their offices and residences remained unreachable as several important streets remained completely flooded with knee-deep to hip-deep water making it impossible for both four-wheelers and two-wheelers to move around.

The disaster management personnel were forced to deploy rubber boats in parts of the city to rescue people as well as to supply essential items. The district administration has issued a helpline number for people facing problems and the number is 9365429314. “Citizens of Guwahati may please contact district administration helpline number for any assistance in wake of waterlogging or other issues,” said a statement along with the helpline number.

It remains a question in the minds of all Guwahatians who have been deceived several times in the past by politicians at the ward level as well as the legislative level, if this problem will ever be solved in the city.
