Guwahati Refinery Initiates Clean-Up Initiative At Jorpukhuri Heritage Site

GUWAHATI: In an attempt to clean-up and rejuvenate Guwahati’s prominent heritage site Jorpukhuri, Indian Oil Guwahati Refinery has provided Kamrup (Metro) District Administration a financial assistance amounting to Rs 10.96 lakh. Executive Director (Guwahati Refinery), S Manchanda, handed over the cheque for the amount to DC Kamrup (Metro), IAS Biswajit Pegu, during a ceremony organized at the Jorpukhuri site on July 4, 2019. The initiative has been taken up by Guwahati Refinery as a special Swachhta project on “Management of Water Bodies” under its various CSR initiatives as well as in accordance to the directives from MoP and NG and Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation for maintenance of water bodies and clean drinking water in 2019-20.

The clean-up and the rejuvenation work of the water body will be conducted through Kamrup (Metro) District Administration on deposit-work basis, and the work will be executed by Water Resources Department, Government of Assam. This has been taken as Speaking at the ceremony, Executive Director S Manchanda said that as part of its observance of Swachhta Pakhwada, Guwahati Refinery decided to clean up and rejuvenate a prominent water body in Guwahati city and with the support from Kamrup (Metro) District Administration and Water Resources Department, Government of Assam, Jorpukhuri was selected. He further shared that Indian Oil has been putting up efforts towards cleaning up of important water bodies across India besides conservation of water through judicious use.

In his speech, DC Kamrup (M) Biswajit Pegu, extended gratitude to Guwahati Refinery for taking the initiative and making the fund available in such a speedy manner for the cause. He further ensured that a committee formed of members from all the stakeholders would be formed to supervise the clean-up of the heritage site. He also appealed to the public to lend their helping hands for maintenance of the water body.

Commissioner of GMC, Debeswar Malakar, IAS, spoke on the future plans of the municipal corporation to set up ecological park around the water body. A prominent member of the Ugratara Devalaya Management Committee Kailash Sarma spoke on the historical significance of the 975 years old water body and appealed everyone to contribute their bit to conserve the same.
