GUWAHATI: Guwahati registered a total of 63 rape cases in the year 2020, revealed a report from the Guwahati Police Commissionerate.
The Guwahati Police Commissionerate has under its jurisdiction three Police Districts, namely East, West, and Central.
According to the data, the maximum number of rape cases was reported from East Police District with 39 cases. Similarly, in 2019, out of a total of 71 rape cases, 33 were registered from the East Police District.
The six police stations (PS) under the jurisdiction of East Police District are: Dispur PS, Basistha PS, Bhangagarh PS, Hatigaon PS, Sonapur PS, and Khetri PS.
Out of the total rape cases, 14 were registered under the Central Police District. The following nine police stations are under the jurisdiction of this Police District: Chandmari PS, Noonmati PS, Geetanagar PS, Pragjyotishpur PS, Panbazar PS, Paltan Bazar PS, Latasil PS, All Women PS Panbazar, and Satgaon PS.
The least number of rape cases were registered under the West Police District. As many as 10 rape cases were registered in the following five police stations of this Police District: Jalukbari PS, Bharalumukh PS, Gorchuk PS, Fatasil Ambari PS, and Azara PS.
On the other hand, despite the COVID-induced lockdown during most part of 2020, the year saw a steep rise in murder cases as compared to 2019.
Under Guwahati Police Commissionerate, a total of 81 murder cases were registered as compared to 71 cases registered in 2019. Additionally, a total of 42 cases related to counterfeit notes were registered under the Guwahati Police Commissionerate in 2020.
