Guwahati Restaurant's River Cruise Capsizes In Brahmaputra

GUWAHATI: A river cruise of the South Coast Restaurant near Fancy Bazar in Guwahati capsized following an increase in the water level of the Brahmaputra over the past few weeks.

According to latest reports, the cruise, which had been closed for the past couple of years, was being run by a person Sunil Beria on a ship under lease from the inland water transport department.

A team of officials of the inland water transport department visited the spot on Friday for carrying out an inspection following the incident. Talking to media persons, an official of the IWTD said it was yet to be ascertained how the incident took place. Initial investigations have revealed that there is no hole in the ship. It is being suspected that the cruise capsized owing to any wreckage, he said.

The official stated that there has been a gradual decrease in the river's water level in the last three days and as such the department will make arrangements to take out the cruise from the river.

Brahmaputra, the only male river in the country, has witnessed many incidents of capsize, especially of boats, in the last few years. One person died after a boat capsized in the Brahmaputra in Nalbari district in July this year. At least four persons, including two kids, had died after a boat turned upside down in the river in Jorhat district's Baghmara area in January this year. A mechanized country boat carrying 40 passengers had capsized on the river in September, 2018. At least three persons were killed in that incident.
