GUWAHATI: As a part of their initiative to spread awareness regarding the need to protect the Bharalu river, an awareness event was organised in the Fatashil Sishu Vidyapith ME School on Friday.
The Bharalu River is an important waterway for Guwahati city, but over the years, neglect and lack of regulations have led to complete damage to the natural waterway. With the aim to make the people of the city aware of the importance of this river and the need to protect it from any further damage, the Save Bharalu Abhiyan organises a host of events from time to time. These include talks, cycling sessions, competitions and expert interactions.
As a part of the same initiative, an awareness campaign was undertaken on the premises of the Fatashil Sishu Vidyapith ME School located on A K Dev Road in Guwahati. The event was attended by a large number of students and teachers of the school. Several members of the Save Bharalu Abhiyan were present for the event including its president Dr. R N Mazumder and they explained to the children the need for preserving the natural waterway. They also explained how the river which was once vibrant with aquatic life, has now been reduced to a mere sewage canal.
This event was conducted under the Catch Them Young (CTY) initiative, which aims at educating the children and the youth about the need for the conservation of the river for the proper functioning of the city’s waterways. The speakers also highlighted the need for the natural waterways of the city to ensure that the problems of urban flooding remain under control.
It is important to note that the state government is also working towards clearing the natural waterways of the city. Evictions have also been carried out by the government as a part of this initiative.
