From selling only about 9.1 million kg of tea at the average price of Rs. 5.68 per kg in its first year, to selling 204 million kg of tea at an average price of almost Rs.140 per kg, the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre has come a long way. The Centre, the second-largest CTC tea auction center in the world is celebrating its 50 years this year.

A webinar titled - 'Guwahati Tea Auction Centre and the Tea Industry' - was held today as part of its golden jubilee celebration.

Dr. KK Dwivedi, Chairman, GTAC inaugurated the webinar.

The participants included Anshuman Kanoria, the chairman of Indian Tea Exporters Association, Abhijeet Hazarika, consultant of TSigma Consultancy and Ravi Suchanti, the chairman and managing director J Thomas & Co Pvt Ltd, and many other traders and officials. The discussions revolved around how best to remain on top of the global tea market and keep producing the best tea in the world to help India be the market leader.

It also organized a manual auction – a journey down memory lane – refreshing everyone's memories when the auctions used to be conducted in the outcry system.

The GTAC's Golden Jubilee Working Committee Chairman C Chaliha said their plans to organize several sports activities in March and April this year to celebrate the event had to be shelved due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Centre was started in the year 1970 on September 25, when the then chairman of Assam Tea Brokers, RG Baruah hammered down the first lot of tea which was 1,317 kg of Brown Orange Pekoe from Haroocharai tea estate. The tea was brought at the auction hall of GTAC at the erstwhile Stadium Guest House in Guwahati by tea trader Zafar Ali for Rs. 42.50 per kg.
